What makes a good website?

What does your website need to make appealling to your audience. Here is what:

1.Good BackGrounds

There are loads of backgrounds available on the internet or in your head. A good background is better than just a white page. Be careful though to choose a background that is not overpowering to the eyes and that your text is still readable.

2.Colour

You need to be as careful with colours as you are on paper because clashing colours can really make your site unpopular. If your text is hard to read or the webpage is hard to look at then the colours are not right.Try and use muted versions of colours and use shades of a certain colour throughout your website.

3.Images

Images do make your site look good but do bear in mind the fact of download time of them. Also don't overload your web page just use a few images or thumbnail images per page that link to the bigger picture.

4.Navigation

When building your website make links to other parts of your website to make it easier for your visitors. Eg: A "back to the top button" linking to the top of the page or a "home" button linking to your front page. Also try and have a menu to go to other parts of your website instead of needing to go back to the front page of your website. As well as that do not make a single page huge; split it up into simple small pages using links.

5.Information

If you are writing a document or turorial etc... make you information clear and easy to understand. The information on your website is what the viewer is wanting to see so if it is not easy to use of very clear then won't want to go on your site again. Try spliting things up into paragraphs and sections so your information can by read and taken in effectively.

6.Interactive

People will like your site if there is something to do on it. Add special little things like a quiz or a weekly vote. If you build your own forum and post important and interesting topics you could get yourself a big community to stay on your site.

7.Keep it simple

This is very important to make it easier for you and your visitors. Firstly do not try and cram everything onto 1 page but spread it out with links within your website. And don't overload your site with colours and pictures so it just looks messy. And you even need to check that you have used the correct font. Espicially on your home page do not cram it on but spread it out with links.

8.Keep it working

The most important thing about your website that it all works. If it doesn't work then you need to check everything and do not start telling everyone about it until it does. The last thing you want is loads of people coming on your website and half of it doesn't work so they never go on again. Lastly make sure it keeps working after you have started it.
